A Light in the Darkness - The False Man

 As anyone who regularly reads this eBook review knows it's been a few weeks since a review has been posted. This is because I hate writing bad reviews, but when all I seem to be reading are stories that for one reason or another aren't worth reading, let alone writing a review about, other than to say, "This was another waste of my time," what else can I do? Seriously, if the people who publish their indie eBooks would take the time to not only proof them for errors, but to ensure the story doesn't come across as though English is that author's second (or fifth) language, and that only recently learned, some of these stories could be saved from extinction.

Then I sorted through the eBooks waiting on my Kindle and discovered The False Man, by indie author David Antonelli and my eyes became glued to the page, er, screen. Here was a story unlike the usual genre I tend to read and even unlike the majority of what I have read outside my usual genre. And I found I became engrossed enough to not want to put it down until I was finished with it and knew all the intricacies of this odd little story.

The False Man is the story of a man whose wife cheats on him, so he heads down to Mexico. South of the border he finds he is falsely accused of murdering a woman and subsequently is thrown into prison. You don't actually have to be in prison in Mexico to imagine that this is not the type of place anyone would want to spend the rest of his life. But this man eventually escapes from his prison and in the course of his trek to get back into the United States he comes across a German photographer, who tries to kill him and forces him to act in self-defense in killing the German photographer. The "hero" of the story uses the dead photographer's ID to re-enter the United States, fearing that his own identity has been compromised by his prison escape. He then takes up life in Los Angeles - as a photographer - using the same stolen ID and finds he is actually quite good at this work.

But how long can a man continue on living under someone else's identity before his false world starts falling down on top of him? That's the story behind David Antonelli's The False Man. An intriguing story of moderate size that has its most surprising aspect in the fact that currently it's listed on Smashwords absolutely FREE. What? No freakin' way, man. Why isn't this author charging for this awesome little story? Beats me, but my suggestion is you head over to Smashwords by clicking on one of the links in this review and purchase - ah - I mean download this great story before the author gets his head on straight and starts charging for it.
